Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is an endurance challenge that takes place within Pollmiller Lake Park in West Point, Iowa. Scheduled for September 18, 2027, this race offers participants the chance to push their physical and mental limits through a series of repetitive 4.167-mile loops.
The course, which winds through South Park/Pollmiller Lake Campgrounds, is designed with paved bike paths, roads, crushed gravel trails, and grassy sections. With minimal elevation changes per loop—just 175 feet up and down—the real challenge lies in the relentless pacing required to keep up for hours on end.
Participants gather at 6:00 a.m. Central Time when the first loop begins, with each subsequent loop starting exactly one hour later until only one runner remains within the time limit. The race format is strict; runners must be present and ready to start their next loop as soon as it’s called, without leaving the course except for essential breaks.
The atmosphere at Broken Anvil is unique, blending intense competition with a supportive community spirit.
