Big Butts

On Saturday, July 17, 2027, the Mississippi Christian University Choctaw Trails will host the BIG BUTTS Trail Race, presented by MUTS (MS Ultra and Trail Society). The race offers distances of 100K, 50K, a 25K Fun Run, and a 100K Relay. Participants start at the university's pavilion with 7.75-mile loops on both cross-country courses and Butts Park single-track trails.
The course is not technical but features small hills and significant elevation gain of approximately 170 feet per loop. The race takes place in mid-July, when Mississippi’s heat and humidity make the event a true endurance challenge. Aid stations are strategically placed along the route with water, Tailwind sports drink, and food.
Registration for this edition closes on Wednesday, July 14th at midnight, ensuring early sign-ups to secure discounts or avoid higher fees after June 1st. Packet pickup is available Friday from 4-6pm at Buffalo Peak Outfitters in Jackson and Saturday morning before the race starts.
Safety measures include mandatory hydration for all runners and headlamps or flashlights for those starting laps after 5:30 p.m., due to safety concerns as daylight diminishes. Pacers are not allowed, but a runner can join another 100K participant during their last two loops for support.
The event promises unique swag and awards for top finishers in each category, with special recognition if any racer beats the current fastest times of 9:42:43 (men) or 10:49:37 (women).
