19° La Filippide Race

The "Planata degli Iblei" Marathon offers runners an unforgettable journey through the rolling hills, dramatic canyons, and enchanting coastline of southern Italy. Starting from the uplands, this point-to-point course follows SP n.10, a former railway line that connects mountain villages to coastal towns at a gentle pace.
As you descend towards Ragusa, the landscape transforms dramatically with every step. At 620 meters above sea level, Ragusa reveals its charm through sweeping tablelands framed by traditional dry stone walls and dramatic rocky canyons known as "Cave." Along this route, ancient necropolises like Cava Volpe, Cava del Paradiso, Misericordia, and Cava Celone dot the landscape, each telling a story of the region’s rich history.
The course then takes you through Contrada Majorana, where scenic plateaus with historic farmhouses provide a picturesque backdrop. As you continue towards Tresauro, one of two major elevation changes awaits—a 400-meter climb at a gradient of 2.5%. This section transitions the countryside into rolling hills, and as you ascend, the scent of the sea grows stronger.
After this ascent, another descent leads through Serramezzana plateau with its brief stretch of unpaved road. The route then rises again for 100 meters at a gradient of 3–4%, leading to Donnafugata Castle. This enchanting manor is famous not only for its architectural beauty but also as the setting in many Italian films and television series, including “Inspector Montalbano.”
From the castle, runners enjoy a gentle descent through olive and carob groves en route to Santa Croce Camerina before reaching Punta Secca. The finish line at this enchanting coastline marks the end of an incredible journey that celebrates the Olympic spirit, camaraderie, and joy of running in one of Italy’s most captivating settings.
