Winter Solstice Vertical Challenge

Winter Solstice Vertical Challenge returns for its sixth year on December 19th from 8 AM to 8 PM at the Mt. Walker trailhead within Olympic National Forest near Quilcene, Washington. This unique endurance event invites participants of all abilities to run or hike as many laps around a challenging course as they wish.
The route winds through rugged terrain with an elevation gain of approximately 2,100 feet per lap. Each loop covers two miles one way for a round-trip distance of four miles. For those looking to push their limits, the trail offers opportunities to complete multiple circuits, reaching distances such as eight or twelve miles.
The course spans from a minimum elevation of 784 feet up to an impressive peak at 2,797 feet above sea level, providing breathtaking views and rewarding scenery with each ascent. Aid stations are conveniently located at the trailhead for participants who wish to refuel throughout their journey.
Dogs are welcome as long as they remain on a leash and owners properly clean up after them. This family-friendly event aims not only to challenge runners but also to support local conservation efforts by donating all proceeds beyond costs to the Washington Trail Association, which works tirelessly to maintain trails for public enjoyment.
