Wansfell Fell Race

Nestled in the heart of Ambleside’s rugged terrain, the Cat AS 3.14 km race offers an exhilarating challenge for runners seeking steep ascents and breathtaking views. The course begins at Stock Ghyll Lane behind the Salutation Hotel, where participants face a sharp ascent right from the start before reaching the fell gate/stile. This initial climb is followed by a runnable section leading to thigh-burning stone steps that ascend directly upwards.
The route then ventures onto open fell with rough grass and rocky terrain, culminating at the summit checkpoint. Runners must navigate their way down the steep descent on the right side of the main path near the bottom for optimal safety and performance. The race’s challenging elevation gain of 405 meters (1329 feet) demands careful attention to footing and navigation skills.
Competitors should expect slippery, wet conditions that can make descents treacherous, especially in misty weather when visibility is low. While the road sections at both ends are marshalled for safety, runners must exercise caution around blind corners during descent. Full Fell Running Association (FRA) kit is mandatory and will be checked before registration.
Registration takes place from 10 am to 11:30 am at Force Cafe on Stockghyll Lane in Ambleside, with a short walk down the hill to reach the start line behind the Salutation Hotel. Prize giving follows immediately after the race concludes back at Force Cafe.
Parking is limited nearby; runners are encouraged to park considerately and check for cancellation notices if conditions become unsafe due to weather or other factors on the day of the event.
