The THE NORTH FACE GROSSGLOCKNER ULTRA-TRAIL (GGUT) invites trail runners to experience the majesty of Austria’s highest peak, the Grossglockner. Starting just before 9:30 PM on a Friday night from Kaprun with headlamps in hand, participants embark on an epic journey through Hohe Tauern National Park. Spanning 110 kilometers and climbing over 6,500 meters of elevation gain, this race follows the legendary Glocknerrunde trail. The course weaves through three Austrian states and seven valleys, crossing the main Alpine ridge twice while passing by fourteen glaciers and more than three hundred peaks towering above 3,000 meters. The route is a mix of technical singletrack trails, steep climbs, fast descents, and high-alpine passes that challenge both body and spirit. As runners navigate through this awe-inspiring landscape under the light of dawn, each step reveals new panoramas and challenges. Aid stations dot the course, providing essential support as tired legs push forward towards the finish line. The race is not just about distance or elevation gain; it’s an immersive journey where every moment on the trail offers a unique perspective and connection to nature. In 2027, Kaprun will host this international gathering of elite athletes, ambitious racers, first-time finishers, crews, volunteers, and trail enthusiasts. The event spans four days with various distances catering to different levels of experience: from the full GGUT ultra-trail to shorter options like the Osttirol Trail (OTT), Grossglockner Trail (GGT), Weißsee Gletscherwelt Trail (GWT), and Kaprun Scenic Trail (KST). There’s also a Mini GGUT for younger participants, ensuring that future generations can share in this mountain adventure.
