The 90th McConnell Shield

The McConnell Shield, now in its 90th edition, is set to take place at Six Mile Water Park in Ballyclare. Part of the NI Athletics XC league, this prestigious cross-country event offers runners an exhilarating experience through scenic parkland terrain.
Participants will be chip-timed as they navigate a challenging course that showcases the natural beauty and varied landscapes of Six Mile Water Park. The race is known for its competitive spirit and rewarding atmosphere, with age category prizes awarded to both male and female competitors. Additionally, there are special trophies up for grabs: the Ladies trophy, the Bertie Grimason trophy for Male Vets, and the coveted McConnell Shield.
Race day registration takes place at East Antrim Harriers clubhouse on Harrier Way Ballyclare from 10:30 AM onwards. No entries will be accepted on race day itself, so it’s important to secure your spot in advance through SI Entries by November 11th at 10 PM. Name transfers are permitted up until the closing date but deferrals cannot be accommodated.
Junior runners have their own races designed for different age groups: U12 for those under 12 on race day, U14 for participants under 14, and U16 for competitors under 16 years of age. These races provide young athletes with a platform to showcase their talents in a supportive environment.
With toilets provided along the course, runners can focus solely on their performance without worrying about logistics during the event. The McConnell Shield promises an unforgettable day out for all participants, combining competitive racing with scenic surroundings and a rich tradition that has made it one of Northern Ireland's most respected cross-country events.
