Thames Ring Series

About the Event

The Thames Ring, an epic trail running series set along the picturesque canals and rivers of England, challenges endurance athletes to push their limits like never before. This iconic race returns for its second year with three distinct distance options: 256 miles (TR250), 158 miles (TR150), and approximately 98 miles (TR100). Each route is meticulously designed to traverse the serene landscapes of rural towpaths, footpaths, and urban areas along the Thames and Grand Union Canal.
Scheduled for April 21st-25th, 2027, the event offers a unique opportunity for runners to experience the beauty and challenge of non-stop running through diverse terrains. The TR250 starts at Goring-on-Thames/Streatley on Wednesday morning, with participants having up to four days and four hours (100 hours) to complete their journey. For those seeking a more manageable yet equally challenging adventure, the 158-mile route offers a generous cutoff time of 53 hours, starting alongside the full distance race.
The TR100 begins on Friday at noon from Nether Heyford and provides runners with approximately 34 hours to cover its nearly 98 miles. All routes are carefully mapped out, providing participants with detailed gpx files and maps for navigation. These resources will be available as free downloads or can be purchased in waterproof versions upon entry.
The race packs contain comprehensive information about the course details, including check point locations and cutoff times, helping runners to plan their strategy effectively. While final maps won't be released until late March, last year's gpx files are already accessible for planning purposes and reconnaissance runs.
Participants will enjoy full tracking via GPS devices provided by Open Tracking, ensuring friends and family can follow the progress of each runner in real-time from anywhere around the globe. The event also offers essential facilities such as changing rooms and toilets at key points along the route, with some checkpoints featuring sleeping tents for runners after 75 miles.
In terms of support, all participants are permitted a single drop bag weighing up to 15kg (20kg for overseas competitors), which will be transported between check points. No outside physical or logistical assistance is allowed during race hours except at designated checkpoint locations where family and friends can provide essential aid like food distribution, clothing changes, and basic first aid.
The entry fees vary based on the distance: £375 (TR250), £200 (TR150), and £150 (TR100). These prices include GPS tracking, medical support at checkpoints, baggage transportation services, and a finishers medal for those who complete their respective distances. Discounts are available to early registrants.
The Thames Ring 256 is not just about the miles; it's an immersive experience that tests mental fortitude as much as physical endurance. With its blend of natural beauty, historic waterways, and rigorous course design, this event stands out among ultra-distance races worldwide. Whether you're a seasoned ultrarunner or looking to challenge yourself in a controlled environment, The Thames Ring offers unparalleled opportunities for growth and achievement.
For more detailed information on logistics, kit requirements, refunds policies, and additional perks like printed maps and merchandise discounts, visit the official race website closer to your chosen event date.
The event promises an unforgettable journey through some of England's most stunning natural landscapes. Prepare yourself for a unique blend of adventure, endurance testing, and community spirit as you embark on one of these challenging yet rewarding routes along the Thames Ring.
