Sheriffs Shootout

The Sheriff's Shootout returns on November 7th, inviting trail runners to embark on a rugged adventure through Montezuma County, Colorado. This third edition promises an unforgettable endurance challenge set against the backdrop of stunning desert landscapes and iconic Southwest scenery.
Competitors will face a one-mile loop that demands both physical prowess and mental fortitude. The course features steep ascents and rocky descents, testing runners' legs with each lap while offering breathtaking views at every turn—dramatic vistas of Mesa Verde National Park and the imposing Sleeping Ute Mountain provide ample motivation to push through.
Participants can choose between a 6-hour or 12-hour race format. Both options offer consistent access to an aid station located near camp, ensuring runners have easy access to hydration, snacks, and gear changes throughout their journey. The event also introduces a new element: the Hot Lap challenge, where racers aim for speed records on individual laps for a chance at winning $100.
For those who prefer teamwork over solo efforts, there are team divisions available. In the 6-hour Pursuit, teams of two can alternate running and resting as they see fit. The more ambitious might opt for the 12-hour Jail Break challenge, where up to four teammates take turns on a grueling full day run.
The Sheriff’s Shootout transforms into an evening celebration as night falls. A bonfire lights up the campsite, drawing in spectators who cheer runners through the darkness while adding to the event's lively atmosphere. The race organizers emphasize community spirit and encourage participants to bring costumes and cowboy hats for added flair.
Entry is free but comes with a request: each participant must contribute an item such as food or drinks to help sustain fellow competitors at aid stations, fostering a sense of camaraderie among runners.
This unique blend of competition, scenic beauty, and friendly community makes The Sheriff’s Shootout not just another race day, but rather a full weekend experience in the heart of Colorado's high desert.
