Saint Marys Lake Trail Series

Nestled at the northern end of the St. Mary’s River watershed, Saint Mary's Lake offers runners an idyllic setting for their next trail adventure on February 27, 2027. This serene location features a main route that winds around the lake's perimeter and extends into the adjacent Salem Forest, providing approximately 8 miles of additional trails.
The race course is meticulously designed to cater to various distances: runners can choose from one lap for an enjoyable day out on nature’s paths or tackle up to three laps for those seeking more endurance-focused challenges. The loop itself is about 10.5 miles long and offers a mix of terrain, including single-track dirt trails, forest roads, and crushed gravel sections along the dam.
The route includes two aid stations: one at the main entrance on Camp Cosoma Road (also serving as start/finish) and another halfway through near Salem Forest’s parking lot off Indian Bridge Road. These stations provide essential supplies such as water, snacks, and even warm food to keep runners fueled throughout their journey. Runners are encouraged to bring additional items for sharing with fellow participants.
The trail system is tranquil, surrounded by dense forests that offer a peaceful escape from the hustle of daily life. While some sections near neighborhoods may introduce slight variations in scenery, the majority of the route remains immersed within nature’s embrace. The terrain features several small hills totaling around 500 feet of elevation gain and loss per lap, making it an ideal venue for runners looking to test their endurance on well-maintained paths.
Participants can park at the main entrance where a day use service charge applies ($3/vehicle for Maryland residents, $5 for out-of-state visitors). Passholders with valid permits are eligible for free entry upon contacting the park office. The event is limited to 100 participants across all distances and encourages carpooling to minimize traffic congestion.
Runners must begin their final lap by 1:30 PM or will be required to complete it independently of race conditions after this time. All races start at 8 AM with a cutoff time set for 4:30 PM, allowing ample opportunity for runners to enjoy the scenic beauty and tranquility of Saint Mary's Lake.
