The Mount Mitchell Heartbreaker is an exhilarating ultramarathon event that takes runners through some of the most breathtaking trails and peaks in Western North Carolina. Scheduled for March 20, 2027, this race offers two challenging distances: a grueling 50-mile course and a less daunting but still formidable 55K route. Starting at Camp Grier in Old Fort, NC, participants will embark on an adventure that winds through the stunning trails of Pisgah National Forest. The terrain is varied, featuring technical singletrack, grassy double track, gravel paths, and even short stretches of pavement. Runners can expect to encounter some of the most challenging climbs in the region, including ascents up Snooks Nose, Green Knob, Black Mountain Crest, Heartbreak Ridge Trails, and Mount Mitchell itself—the highest peak east of the Mississippi. The 50-mile course includes three major climbs: up Snooks Nose followed by a descent down Green Knob; another climb to Mt. Mitchell via the Crest Trail before descending Buncombe Horse; and finally, an ascent up Bald Knob Ridge with a subsequent drop down Heartbreak Ridge. The 55K route mirrors much of this journey but omits the climb up Mount Mitchell. Aid stations are strategically placed every four to seven miles along both courses, providing essential hydration and nutrition options such as water, Gatorade, bananas, orange slices, potato chips, pretzels, peanut butter sandwiches, and M&Ms. These stops offer runners a chance to refuel and recharge before tackling the next segment of trail. Given ongoing repair work on parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mount Mitchell, there's a possibility that race organizers may need to adjust course routes if repairs aren't completed in time for March 20th. However, should this happen, alternative courses will be utilized which still offer spectacular scenery and challenging terrain. Participants are encouraged to prepare thoroughly for rapidly changing weather conditions atop the mountain. The event has robust safety measures in place, including mandatory gear requirements such as a rain shell, at least 30 ounces of water capacity, an emergency whistle, cell phone with live tracking capability (if available), and an emergency blanket. All runners must carry these items throughout their journey. Camp Grier serves as the perfect basecamp for this event, offering various lodging options ranging from private cabins to dorm-style bunkhouses and even tent camping right at the race start line. This proximity ensures that athletes can easily transition between rest and run without needing extensive travel time before or after events. The Mount Mitchell Heartbreaker is more than just a race; it's an opportunity to explore one of North Carolina’s most scenic regions while supporting local trail development initiatives through partnerships with organizations like G5 Trail Collective. Join us for what promises to be an unforgettable day in the mountains!
