Morcote Scal

On Saturday, May 1, 2027, runners will converge on the picturesque town of Morcote for the fifth iteration of the Morcote Scal. This unique race is organized by the Municipality of Morcote and the Carnival Association, promising an exhilarating experience that combines history with athletic challenge.
Registration is capped at a select group of 100 adult runners who will navigate through the winding streets of Morcote before tackling its iconic monumental staircase. Spanning from Piazza Granda to the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso, this non-timed knockout race features an awe-inspiring ascent of 420 steps steeped in history and panoramic views.
The event's innovative format sees competitors drawn into heats of four or five runners each. The top two finishers advance while the remaining participants compete again in repechage heats to ensure everyone gets at least two chances up the staircase.
Inspired by Pierre Derrien, a long-time Morcote resident who frequently trains on this route and draws parallels with Olympic disciplines, the Morcote Scal offers an unparalleled blend of competition and scenic beauty. Runners will not only test their physical limits but also enjoy the unique atmosphere that Morcote’s “Monumental Climb” provides.
Adding to the excitement for younger participants, a special KidScal event is being introduced this year, open to children aged 9 to 12. This addition ensures that future generations can experience and appreciate the town's rich heritage through sport.
