Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge

About the Event

The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge beckons runners to explore the rugged beauty of Wyoming’s Medicine Bow National Forest on July 10, 2027. This endurance-focused event offers a unique opportunity for participants to challenge themselves while supporting veterans through trail running and hiking initiatives.
Set against the backdrop of iconic Laramie Peak, this race is more than just an athletic endeavor; it's a celebration of community and resilience. The event takes place at Friend Park Campground, offering runners the chance to experience both alpine wilderness and camaraderie in equal measure. Basecamp serves as the central hub for all participants, providing essential amenities such as water stations, medical support from the Douglas Volunteer Fire Department, fire pits, drop-bag storage, and a variety of food options including hot meals like burgers, pancakes, and quesadillas.
Three distinct challenges cater to various levels of experience:
- 24-Hour Mountain Endurance Challenge: Starting at 9:00 AM on July 10th, this grueling event invites runners to see how many times they can summit Laramie Peak within a 24-hour period. Each lap covers approximately nine miles with nearly 3,000 feet of elevation gain and loss, making it both physically demanding and rewarding.
- 12-Hour Challenge (Rolling Start): Participants have the flexibility to start their journey anytime between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM on July 10th. This rolling start window allows runners to choose whether they prefer to chase daylight or run through the cool mountain night, converging towards a finish around dawn Sunday.
- Single Summit Challenge (Rolling Start): Ideal for hikers and first-time mountain runners, this event offers an opportunity to experience Laramie Peak without committing to ultra-distance running. Participants can choose their start time between 9:00 AM on July 10th and no later than 5:00 AM on July 11th.
The route itself is a technical journey through dense pine forests, rocky paths, narrow ridgelines, and granite outcrops, culminating in breathtaking views from the summit at nearly 10,000 feet. Runners must be prepared for high-altitude conditions, rapidly changing weather patterns, and significant elevation changes.
In addition to physical challenges, participants are encouraged to support a meaningful cause by joining forces with the Warrior Trail Foundation (WTF), which provides resources and recreational therapy through trail running and fast-packing programs designed specifically for veterans. This partnership ensures that every step taken contributes positively towards supporting those who have served our nation.
To ensure safety and success on this challenging course, runners are advised to bring appropriate gear such as a windproof jacket, warm layers, reliable headlamps with extra batteries, trail shoes with good traction, trekking poles for steep sections, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, emergency blankets, personal blister care supplies, and high-calorie food.
The Laramie Peak Endurance Challenge promises an unforgettable experience that combines breathtaking scenery, rigorous physical demands, and a supportive community atmosphere. Whether you're aiming to push your limits in the 24-hour challenge or simply enjoy the majestic views of a single summit ascent, this event offers something for every level of runner.
