About the Event

Conquer Iceland's volcanic heart at the Hengill Ultra Trail on June 5-6, 2026. This 14th edition is a true trail runner's pilgrimage, offering distances from a 5K to a monumental 106K ultramarathon that loops twice through the raw, geothermal landscapes surrounding Hveragerði. The course is a breathtaking journey across lava fields, up to panoramic peaks like Ölkelduhnjúkur, and through steaming valleys, offering some of the most uniquely beautiful and challenging terrain in the country. As an ITRA-recognized event, it transforms the entire town into a vibrant running carnival, celebrating the sport amidst the very forces that shape Iceland.

About Hveragerði

Hveragerði is a town of 3,000 people (2020) in South Iceland. Hveragerði is uniquely located in a geothermally active area. Its name is derived from an Icelandic word for hot spring - hver. The hot springs in the middle of town are the main tourist attraction and they also provide heat for local famous greenhouses which are used mainly for flower production. If you look towards the hills bordering the northern part of the town, you will also see steam plumes drifting from various active areas.
