Grand Canyon of the South

Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of Virginia's Breaks Interstate Park at the Grand Canyon of the South Ultras, an inaugural trail running festival that promises breathtaking views and challenging terrain. The park’s dramatic sandstone cliffs and dense forests offer a unique backdrop for runners to explore miles of scenic singletrack trails carved into the Appalachian Mountains.
The Morning 10K starts at 9:00 AM, inviting participants to experience rolling mountain landscapes and panoramic canyon vistas on technical but approachable trail sections. As day turns to evening, the Sunset 10K begins at 6:00 PM, allowing runners to watch the sunset paint Breaks Canyon in shades of gold and crimson.
For those seeking a full-day adventure, the Double 10K option combines both morning and evening races for an unforgettable 20K challenge. This unique experience showcases the park’s beauty from sunrise to sunset, offering stunning views and cooler evening temperatures ideal for photography enthusiasts.
The Grand Canyon of the South 50K and 100 Mile events start at 8:00 AM on race day, designed to highlight Breaks Interstate Park's diverse trail system. Runners will encounter rugged mountain climbs, rocky sections, flowing singletrack, forested hollows, and multiple scenic overlooks.
Race weekend transforms into a family adventure with lodging discounts for registered runners, camping options within the park, access to amenities like a water park (seasonal), fishing opportunities, paddle boat rentals, playgrounds, picnic areas, and hiking trails. Enjoy on-site dining that offers spectacular canyon views after your race.
More than just a competition, this event celebrates Southwest Virginia’s natural beauty and outdoor recreation culture. The Grand Canyon of the South Ultras invites trail runners to discover one of the most underappreciated destinations in eastern United States while supporting local tourism and community engagement.
