The Freedom 5k & Half returns to Washington, District of Columbia on July 5th, bringing runners through the historic heart of Georgetown along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal path. This year marks another chapter in a race that has become an integral part of local community life and charity support for Operation Enduring Warrior. Participants will find themselves immersed not just in a run or walk but also in the rich history and vibrant energy of one of America’s most iconic cities.
As dawn breaks on July 5th, runners will set off from Fletcher's Boat House along the Potomac River waterfront, where early morning light casts long shadows over the water. The air is likely to be warm with a slight breeze, carrying hints of nearby cafes and gardens blooming in full summer glory. Along the canal path, trees provide welcome shade for those who start earlier as temperatures rise through mid-morning. This flat course offers scenic views at every turn, from joggers greeting neighbors along familiar routes to the occasional barge passing by on the Potomac.
The Freedom 5k & Half is more than just a race; it’s an annual tradition that honors service members and veterans with proceeds supporting Operation Enduring Warrior. Since its inception in 2016, this event has grown from a modest gathering into one of the city's most anticipated races each year, attracting hundreds of runners who come together to raise funds for those who have served their country. Awards are presented at both distances, celebrating first-place finishers as well as top three age group winners in every five-year bracket up to 80+. Virtual options allow participants from all over the world to join and contribute.
The Freedom 5k & Half unfolds along a picturesque stretch of land that winds through Georgetown’s historic district before reaching Fletcher's Boat House for both start and finish lines. Runners will navigate a mix of paved pathways, offering a smooth surface ideal for racing without major elevation changes or technical terrain challenges. The half marathon course extends further but still remains largely flat with its beginning near the Potomac Boat Club and ending back at Fletcher’s.
On race day, participants should expect temperatures to feel around 26.5°C during peak times of morning and early afternoon hours when most runners will be out on the course. With an average humidity level hovering between 70-80%, it’s essential for everyone to stay hydrated as they move through sections with high UV exposure reaching a very high index rating. Rainfall predictions are minimal at only about 5mm, making trail conditions hard and dry throughout most of the day.
