Fred Whitton Challenge 2027 - VOLUNTEERS

The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is an iconic cycling event that draws cyclists from across the UK and beyond to tackle one of the most challenging routes in the country. Celebrating the legacy of Fred Whitton, who was instrumental in promoting cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire, this 112-mile ride through the Lake District offers a true test for even the most experienced riders.
Starting from picturesque Grasmere, participants face an array of punishing climbs including Kirkstone Pass, Honister Pass, Newlands Pass, Whinlatter Pass, Hardknott Pass, Wrynose Pass, and Blea Tarn Pass. Each ascent presents its own unique challenges, with one section boasting a steep 30% gradient that comes late in the ride at mile 98.
While elite cyclists may complete this grueling course in just under six hours, most riders will take closer to eleven hours or more to finish. The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is renowned for its scenic beauty and formidable terrain, making it a bucket-list event for serious cyclists seeking an unforgettable challenge amidst the stunning landscapes of the Lake District World Heritage Site.
Registration for this prestigious ride opens on November 2nd with special charity entries and overseas slots available, followed by general ballot entry from December 1st to 10th. Ballot results are announced between December 14th and 20th, leading up to the big day in May when cyclists gather once again for this annual pilgrimage of endurance and camaraderie.
