The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is an iconic cycling event that draws enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond to the breathtaking Lake District. Named after Fred Whitton, a passionate advocate for cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire, this challenging ride honors his legacy by pushing cyclists to their limits.
Riders tackle 112 miles of grueling terrain through some of England's most scenic landscapes. The route begins at picturesque Grasmere and includes formidable climbs like Kirkstone Pass, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott, Wrynose, and Blea Tarn passes. With gradients reaching up to 30%, the course demands strength and endurance as it winds through winding roads that offer stunning views of lakes and mountains.
While elite riders may complete the route in just under six hours, most participants take closer to eleven or more hours to finish this demanding ride. Each mile brings new challenges and rewards, culminating in a profound sense of achievement for those who reach the end.
Registration opens on November 2nd with special charity entries available alongside overseas and deferred entry options. General ballot places are then made available from December 1st until the 10th, after which results will be announced between December 14th and 20th. The event itself takes place on May 9th, offering cyclists a chance to experience one of Britain's most challenging yet rewarding cycling experiences.
