The Wheelbase Fred Whitton Challenge is an iconic cycling event that draws enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond, renowned for its formidable terrain within the Lake District. Named after Fred Whitton, who championed cycle sport in Cumbria and North Lancashire, this charity ride honors his legacy by offering a true test of endurance.
Cyclists embark on a grueling 112-mile route that winds through some of Britain's most scenic landscapes. Starting from Grasmere, the course features legendary climbs such as Kirkstone Pass, Honister, Newlands Hause, Whinlatter, Hardknott Pass, Wrynose Pass, and Blea Tarn. The final stretch includes a steep ascent with gradients exceeding 30%, adding an extra layer of challenge at mile 98.
While the fastest riders can complete the course in under six hours, most participants aim for a more leisurely pace, often taking up to eleven or even twelve hours to finish. This event is celebrated not just for its physical demands but also for the camaraderie among cyclists and breathtaking views of the World Heritage Site that surrounds them.
