FOUR RESERVOIRS 53KM ULTRA RUN AND 25KM TRAIL RUN 2026
About the Event
The Four Reservoirs Ultra Trail Run returns on Sunday, 18th October 2026, marking its final edition before making way for an exciting new ultra run in the following year. This race is set against the stunning backdrop of County Durham, offering runners a unique blend of natural beauty and challenging terrain. The event starts from Shotley Bridge and takes participants through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the region. The 25km trail run follows part of the longer route before diverging at Rowley Station to descend beside A68 towards Allensford Park, rejoining the main course via Ebchester, Hamsterley, and Derwent Walk. For those seeking a more extensive adventure, the 53km ultra trail offers a circular journey that includes visits to four reservoirs—Hisehope Reservoir being one of them—and passes through Waskerley Way, Muggleswick Woods, and the scenic Derwent Gorge. The route also features road sections with panoramic views over Derwent Reservoir. Both distances are supported by well-placed feed stations stocked with VOOM Nutrition Pocket Rockets, hydration packs, and a variety of snacks to keep runners fueled throughout their journey. For safety reasons, 53km participants must carry essential items such as a charged mobile phone, food supplies, a lightweight jacket, and a headtorch if finishing after sunset. The race begins between 7:30am and 8:00am for the ultra distance, with an additional start window from 9:00 to 9:30am for the shorter trail run. The event is strictly for runners who are prepared to tackle challenging terrain at a steady pace; those intending to walk the entire route may find it unsuitable. Upon crossing the finish line, all participants will receive commemorative medals and t-shirts as well as refreshments and snacks to celebrate their achievement. Free parking is available at Shotley Bridge Hospital & Surgery for convenience. This event promises an unforgettable experience with its mix of sweeping moorland, dense woodlands, and breathtaking reservoir views—making it one of the most scenic ultra trail runs in the North East region. It’s a true adventure that showcases County Durham's natural beauty while challenging even the most seasoned runners. Join us for this final edition of The Four Reservoirs Ultra Trail Run and be part of an incredible running journey through some of Britain's finest landscapes.
