FireCracker Footrace

The FireCracker Footrace returns to Park Rapids, Minnesota on July 4th for its 48th annual celebration. This year's event offers a scenic route through the historic Heartland Park.
Heartland Park greets participants with its lush greenery and well-maintained trails. On race morning, the air carries a crispness that hints at the early summer chill, but as runners begin their journey, the temperature quickly rises to hover around 20 degrees Celsius. The course winds through the park's winding paths, offering a mix of gentle hills and flat stretches. Notable features include the picturesque Heartland Lake and the historic gazebo where the start line is set.
Running or walking this year means supporting a cause that has long been near and dear to the community—since 1973, it has served as a beacon for runners from across Minnesota. With over 900 participants in last year's race, organizers are aiming for even greater numbers in 2026.
The FireCracker Footrace comprises three different distances: the popular 5K walk/run, a dedicated kids' fun run for those under 12 years old, and various age-specific categories. This year’s event is certified by USATF as fast, ensuring both competitive runners and first-timers have an excellent experience.
The race begins at Heartland Park, with participants making their way through the park's hard and dry surface, which feels smooth despite its firmness. The course layout includes a slight elevation change that adds variety to the run but remains manageable for all skill levels. Aid stations are strategically placed along the route to ensure runners stay hydrated and fueled.
On race day, temperatures will range from 15.7 to 25.7 degrees Celsius, with an average feel of around 20 degrees. The humidity level is at a comfortable 71.9%, making for pleasant conditions despite the warmth. Wind speeds are typically moderate at 10.4 kilometers per hour, providing runners with just enough breeze to stay cool.
