Fast hiking Les 1000 Marches de Sète

Embark on an exhilarating adventure through Sète’s historic streets and winding staircases during the 14 km loop of the 1,000 Steps of Sète. This unique challenge takes place in mid-December when the city's vibrant summer festivities have given way to a more tranquil ambiance. Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and Étang de Thau, Sète offers mild winter temperatures around 10°C, though be prepared for occasional gusts from the tramontane wind.
The race route weaves through Mont Saint-Clair, ascending over 640 meters in elevation gain across nearly three and a half times its height. The course begins along the Corniche seafront before climbing into the pine grove of Forêt des Pierres Blanches. From there, it twists up steep paths and staircases towards the summit cross, passing by oyster beds on one side and offering panoramic views over Sète’s lido and Agde.
Organized by the Sète Escapade club in collaboration with FFRandonnée and the City of Sète, this event emphasizes teamwork rather than competition. Participants join pace groups based on their intended speed (5, 5.5 or 6 km/h-e) to complete the course together. Upon finishing as a group, you’ll receive a Gold, Silver, or Bronze "Pouffre" medal in recognition of your effort.
After crossing the finish line, indulge in Sète’s culinary delights such as octopus-filled tielles and fresh oysters straight from Étang de Thau. Explore local culture at Mont-Saint-Clair lighthouse where Paul Valéry is laid to rest or visit the Corniche beach that inspired Georges Brassens’ poem "Supplique pour être enterré à la plage de Sète." Whether you're a seasoned hiker, Nordic walker, or trail runner, this event offers an unforgettable blend of physical challenge and cultural immersion.
