Dark Divide Trail Races

Immerse yourself in one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and challenging trail running experiences at the Dark Divide Trail Races scheduled from September 1 to September 5, 2027. This year’s edition features two main events: the grueling yet rewarding Dark Divide 100 Miler on Friday through Sunday, and a more accessible weekend event including the 50K race and a family-friendly 14-mile fun run both taking place on September 3.
The centerpiece of this series is undoubtedly the Dark Divide 100 Miler, which starts and finishes at the Cispus Learning Center near Randle, Washington. This ultra-distance course winds through the heart of the Central Washington Cascades within the vast and remote Dark Divide Roadless Area. Runners will traverse steep technical trails with rugged terrain that challenge even the most seasoned endurance athletes.
The race is set amidst stunning natural beauty: serrated sub-alpine ridges painted by wildflowers, deep solitary valleys filled with ancient trees, tumbling streams over waterfalls into sparkling pools, and panoramic views of glaciated volcanoes. This unique landscape offers a rare glimpse into the world as it once was, making each step an adventure in itself.
The 100 Miler is not just about endurance; it’s also steeped in tradition and community spirit. The race honors Mike “Bushwhacker” Burke, a five-time Hardrock finisher who played a significant role in shaping this event into what it is today. His legacy lives on through the Dark Divide Trail Races.
For 2027, there are new cash prizes to inspire runners:
- $2,000 for the first female sub-24 hour finish
- $2,000 for the first male sub-20 hour finish
- $2,000 for the first non-binary runner under 20 hours
- A unique $10,000 prize for completing five consecutive Dark Divide 100 Milers
To ensure a safe and fair race experience, participants must meet strict qualifications. These include evidence of previous successful completion of ultra-marathons with significant vertical gain or wilderness activities verified by GPS data and letters to Wonderland Running.
The course features mandatory pacer assistance from the Wright Meadow Aid Station onwards (mile 51.6), allowing runners to swap pacers at Summit Prairie Aid Station (71.4 miles) and Juniper Ridge Aid Station (93.7 miles). Pacers must adhere strictly to race rules, including signing a waiver and accompanying their runner throughout their time on course.
The Cispus Learning Center provides full facilities for the event with bunkhouses, showers, kitchen space, and ample parking. Nearby camping options are also available for those who prefer to stay close by in tents or RVs during the weekend festivities.
In addition to the race itself, participants must complete 8 hours of volunteer service related to habitat restoration, trail maintenance, or inclusivity initiatives aimed at underrepresented groups before registering for the event. This requirement underscores the importance of giving back and preserving these natural spaces.
