Coopers Rock 50 km and Half Marathon Trail Run

On April 24, 2027, trail runners will converge on Coopers Rock State Forest for an exhilarating race through rugged terrain and breathtaking scenery. The event features both a challenging 50 km course and a half marathon (21 km), each weaving through the forest's diverse trails.
The longer distance covers nearly every southern trail of the state park, offering dramatic vistas of Cheat Canyon and Cheat Lake along with towering boulder formations. With over 5,000 feet of elevation gain, this route presents technical sections filled with loose rocks and roots, making it a true test for experienced runners. The half marathon follows similar terrain but is shorter in length and has around 2,000 feet of climbing.
Both races start at the Overlook Area early on race day, at 7:00 am sharp, after a brief meeting with organizers at 6:40 am. Runners will encounter six aid stations spaced strategically along the longer course and three for those tackling the half marathon distance. Each station offers essential supplies including water, Gatorade, and trail-friendly snacks like sandwiches and chips.
Participants should prepare to navigate variable terrain and steep climbs while enjoying spectacular views of West Virginia's natural beauty. The race day atmosphere is supportive yet competitive, with volunteers ensuring all runners adhere strictly to course rules and cutoff times for safety reasons.
Registration closes on April 16th online or in person during packet pickup the week before at Coopers Rock State Forest. Entry fees vary depending on when you sign up but are a donation supporting conservation efforts through the Coopers Rock Foundation.
This event is not just about running; it's an opportunity to explore and help preserve one of West Virginia’s most stunning natural treasures.
