BALS Racing invites you to embrace the beauty and challenge of nature at the 3rd annual Carolina Thread race, set for Saturday, May 8, 2027. This unique event takes place within Westminster Park's sprawling trail system, offering runners a picturesque loop that winds through lush landscapes and along scenic waterways.
The course features a stunning 1.75-mile circuit with approximately 155 feet of elevation gain per lap. Runners can choose between two thrilling options: an exhilarating 8-hour adventure aimed at conquering the 50K distance, or a challenging yet manageable 4-hour option perfect for tackling your first half marathon.
Westminster Park offers more than just breathtaking trails; it boasts ample space near the start/finish line where runners and their support crews can set up camp from early morning. The venue is also home to an extensive playground, acres of open fields, a 18-hole frisbee disc golf course that hosted the National Collegiate Championships in 2026, restroom facilities, fishing spots along the river (with proper licensing), and a massive pavilion providing shelter for up to two hundred runners.
BALS Racing is committed to promoting healthy living through their BALS Foundation, which provides organic food to children and families in need. Ten percent of race profits will support this initiative, ensuring that every step you take contributes positively to the community.
Aid stations are strategically placed at the start/finish line with a variety of nutritious options including fresh fruit, chips, candy, cookies, water, and Just Ingredients Electrolytes—ensuring no runner goes hungry. Hot organic meals prepared on race day will be available throughout the event as well.
All participants can look forward to receiving a swag bag filled with unique BALS merchandise and stickers crafted by local artisans. Finishing runners will also receive handcrafted medals from renowned artist Brie Los, known for her intricate designs at www.wickedskinsawards.com. The top three male and female finishers in both the 8-hour and 4-hour categories will be awarded custom-made trophies to commemorate their achievements.
Packet pickup is scheduled on Friday, May 7th, from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Charlotte Running Company (Riverwalk), followed by a Saturday morning session closer to race day. Additionally, there are discounts available for merchandise and meals provided in collaboration with local businesses such as Ritchie's Italian Bistro.
Pacers are not permitted unless approved on an individual basis by Steven Lutjens of BALS Racing. Lodging recommendations include nearby AirBNBs or similar accommodations within the area to make your stay convenient and comfortable.
Registration before April 14, 2027 guarantees a medal upon completion. Should unforeseen circumstances arise that necessitate cancellation (earthquakes, wildfires, snow storms, tropical storms, tigers), race transfers are possible under special conditions. Pregnant runners have the option to defer their participation for up to one year or transfer their bib to another runner.
