Butterfield Canyon Marathon

Experience the breathtaking Butterfield Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon on August 28, 2027, starting at the scenic Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park near Kennecott Mine. Nestled amidst dense foliage and stunning mountain vistas, this race offers a challenging yet rewarding trail experience.
### Race Details
Marathon:
- Start Time: 5:00 AM
- Distance: 26.2 miles with an elevation gain of +4,556 feet.
- Terrain: 72% dirt trails, 17% fire roads, and 10% dirt roads.
Half Marathon:
- Start Time: 6:00 AM
- Distance: 13.1 miles with an elevation gain of +1,950 feet.
- Terrain: 81% dirt trails, 9% fire roads, and 8% dirt roads.
### Course Highlights
#### Marathon Route:
The marathon begins on smooth single-track trails that wind through dense forests under the cover of early morning darkness. The first five miles offer a mix of rocky climbs and scenic ridges with breathtaking views. At Yellow Fork Aid Station, runners will find essential supplies before tackling steep ascents like Rose Canyon Road and Rio Escondido Trail.
After crossing Gun Slinger Slope—a challenging climb—the course continues through new single-track trails leading back to the finish line via the ridge section. The second half introduces a variety of terrains including dirt roads and fire roads, culminating in an exhilarating downhill run to the final stretch.
#### Half Marathon Route:
Starting later than the marathon, the half marathon follows similar terrain but with fewer elevation changes overall. Runners begin on smooth single-track trails through dense woods before climbing up Yellow Forks Trail towards scenic ridges. The course then descends back down via new single-track sections and fire roads to a final push toward the finish line.
### Race Experience
Pre-Race:
- Packet Pickup: Friday, 3 PM - 6 PM at Sandy Salt Lake Running Store.
- Race Day Packet Pick-up: Starting from 4 AM on race day.
- Early Registration (ends February 28):
- Marathon: $80
- Half Marathon: $60
During Race:
- Aid Stations: Well-stocked with Tailwind, water, Honey Stinger gels/waffles, fruit, and assorted snacks like Swedish Fish or Nerd Clusters.
- Course Marking: Pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals ensure clear navigation. Red flagging marks wrong-way trails.
Post-Race:
- Awards & Medals: Custom locally made finisher medals for all participants; age division awards in multiple categories from >20 to 70+.
- Breakfast Spread: Provided by Great Harvest Bread, featuring sweet bread and pumpkin chocolate chip bread along with chocolate milk, orange juice, bananas, and other treats.
