BURGH BACKYARD - Edinburgh & Lothian’s Backyard Ultra

The Burgh Backyard, set for Saturday, March 20, 2027, invites runners from across Edinburgh and Lothian to participate in an extraordinary endurance challenge. This unique event takes place at Dalkeith Country Park, a picturesque location that offers both scenic beauty and challenging terrain.
Participants must complete a 6.7056km loop (approximately 4.167 miles) within one hour each time the race begins on the hour. The course loops through lush forests and open fields of Dalkeith Country Park, providing runners with varied landscapes to tackle as they push their limits in this grueling yet rewarding competition.
The event continues until just a single runner remains standing, who then must complete an additional solo yard within one hour to claim victory as the official "Last One Standing." This format allows competitors ample time between yards to rest, hydrate, and strategize for the next round. However, missing any start or failing to finish a yard within the designated period will result in elimination.
Dalkeith Country Park serves not only as the race venue but also offers runners and their support crews space to set up base camps on the Palace Lawn near Dalkeith Palace. Each runner is allowed one tent or gazebo with a 3m x 3m footprint, along with access to basic amenities like toilets, medical staff, live results updates, and waste points.
Runners are required to bring their own food supplies, clothing, and equipment for the duration of the event. The race village provides drinking water, hot water, snacks, and vendors for additional sustenance but does not offer power outlets outside of essential operations areas. As such, participants should come prepared with battery packs and other charging solutions.
Support crews can assist runners between yards by providing food, drinks, kit changes, foot care, and general race support within the event village boundaries. However, they cannot accompany runners on the course or provide assistance while a yard is in progress.
