27. Int. Schafberglauf

On May 8, 2027, runners will gather at the valley station of SchafbergBahn in St. Wolfgang to tackle one of Austria’s most challenging and scenic mountain races: the International Schafberglauf. This year marks the event's 26th edition, part of a tradition that began back in 1983.
The race covers an elevation gain of 1,188 meters over its 7.2 km course, leading runners through lush alpine meadows and steep trails with breathtaking views of Lake Wolfgang and Lake Mondsee. The route winds up to Dorneralm at 1,011 m above sea level before reaching the summit station in St. Gilgen's municipality.
Runners will experience a mix of terrain, including runnable sections on forest paths and technical stretches through scree slopes with switchbacks. The gradient ranges from 4% to an intense 24%, offering both scenic beauty and significant challenges along the way.
Participants can expect stunning panoramic views throughout their ascent, culminating in a rewarding finish at SchafbergBahn's mountain station. After crossing the line, runners will receive a commemorative medal and have access to free descent rides back down the mountain.
With its rich history dating back over 130 years since the opening of the SchafbergBahn railway, this race not only tests athletic limits but also celebrates Austria’s unique cultural heritage in the heart of the Salzkammergut region.
