Nestled in the charming town of Ibbenbüren, Germany, the Detlev Trail Ultra is an endurance challenge that caters to trail runners who thrive on steep ascents and technical terrain. Set against the backdrop of stunning natural landscapes, this 50-kilometer race offers a unique blend of history, beauty, and physical prowess.
The event begins promptly at 8:30 AM from Groner Allee 149 in Ibbenbüren, where participants will embark on an approximately 16.7 kilometer loop that they must complete three times to reach the full distance. The route winds through a mix of hiking trails and single-track paths with around 500 meters of elevation gain per lap, making it both challenging and rewarding for experienced trail runners.
Participants are advised to bring their own hydration and nutrition supplies as there is no official race provision. Each loop passes by the start/finish area where racers can collect any additional items they might need or discard waste before continuing on their journey. The course itself is not marked, so navigational skills will be crucial for success.
The trail features a variety of highlights that add to its allure: a memorial stone marking a tragic event, war gravesites, the mystical Felsengrotte "Doctors Loch," and enchanting moss-covered forests. Runners can also look forward to scaling the Dreihasenstein and navigating through the challenging Kletterfelsen Brumleytal.
To ensure safety during longer daylight hours, runners who may still be out after 16:30 PM are encouraged to carry a headlamp or flashlight for illumination. The race has an overall time limit of nine hours with some flexibility at the organizer's discretion.
Registration is open until the day before the event, provided there is space available in either the Ultra category (24 spots) or the shorter 2/3 distance option (6 spots). Participants are required to pay a registration fee of €5 and must be self-sufficient throughout the race. The course map can be found on Komoot and Germin for detailed planning.
Race results will be available through Race Result, where participants can also view real-time standings during the event.
