Geography and Terrain

The race is staged in Kanab, UT (84741), at the edge of the Colorado Plateau. The course is an out-and-back format starting at an elevation of 4,970 feet. Surface: Hard-packed and soft sand, sand dunes (Coral Pink Sand Dunes for the 115M), red rock climbs, and desert forest trails. Climate: Typical May highs are 78°F (25°C) with lows of 44°F (7°C). Rainfall is minimal during this period, but high-desert sun exposure is a primary obstacle. Flora/Fauna: Runners may encounter Bighorn sheep, mule deer, jackrabbits, and desert arachnids. The flora includes desert cacti and Indian paintbrush.
