About the Event

Experience the breathtaking beauty of West Virginia's Monongahela National Forest at the upcoming Great Gravel Adventure. This year marks its second edition, set for Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The race will wind through the picturesque Cheat-Potomac District within this vast forest reserve, offering a unique blend of challenging terrain and stunning scenery. The event is nestled in Stuart Recreation Area, along the tranquil banks of Shavers Fork River, just east of Elkins. This area, with its rich history dating back to 1937 when it was constructed by CCC laborers, provides runners with excellent hiking trails and fishing opportunities.
As part of the West Virginia Gravel Series, this adventure promises a memorable race for all skill levels. The course predominantly follows gravel roads but also includes sections on rail trails and paved paths, ensuring an engaging journey through diverse landscapes.
Aid stations will be strategically placed along your route to ensure you stay fueled and hydrated. Two aid stations are set up for the medium and long courses, while a single station caters to short-course participants. We advise bringing appropriate fuel sources as well as monitoring weather conditions—Elkins can experience significant temperature fluctuations during autumn.
Race day begins at 9:00 AM with Long Course riders starting from Stuart Recreation Area’s small pavilion. Medium course racers will follow, departing at 10:00 AM, and Short Course participants along with e-bike riders are scheduled to start at 10:30 AM. The short course covers approximately 33 miles, while the medium and long courses extend over 48 and 75 miles respectively.
The route for each distance is meticulously mapped out, offering a mix of challenging climbs and scenic descents through the Fernow Experimental Forest and other forested areas. You'll traverse Clifton-Nail Run Road before reaching the second aid station, where Long Course participants will turn onto Log Lick Run road to complete their journey.
For e-bike enthusiasts, there's an exclusive 25-mile route that mirrors part of the medium course, allowing you to enjoy the same scenic beauty but with a little extra assistance from your electric bike. Detailed maps for all routes are available on the WV Gravel Series website.
Upon completing your race, indulge in complimentary meals and t-shirts provided at registration. Enjoy additional festivities as you attend the Forest Festival Kickoff Party and Chili Cook-Off, scheduled for September 26th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in Elkins.
Prizes await top finishers across genders and categories, with cash awards given to first, second, and third place winners on both male and female long course teams. Accommodation options are plentiful, ranging from individual camping sites at Stuart Recreation Area to group campsites just a short drive away.
