Wellington XTrail Spring Series - McKerrows Revenge
About the Event
Nestled amidst Wellington’s rugged terrain, McKerrows Revenge offers runners an unforgettable adventure through some of New Zealand's most pristine native bush and challenging trails. This trail race features three distinct courses that cater to various skill levels: the Long Course (16 km), Medium Course (12 km), and Short Course (6 km). The 16-kilometer long course starts at Wainui Athletics Club grounds, where runners immediately face a steep ascent up Whakanui Track. This section is notorious for its technical terrain and stunning views of the surrounding bushland. After reaching the summit, participants traverse McKerrow’s Track in a clockwise loop before descending back to Richard Prouse Park via Gums Loop and Tana Umaga Track. The 12-kilometer medium course follows similar initial steps but skips part of the challenging ascent through Whakanui Track, offering runners an equally scenic yet less strenuous experience. Both courses feature sections that require careful navigation due to their intricate trail layout; participants are advised against exploring these areas beforehand unless equipped with a map and GPS. For those looking for a shorter adventure, the 6-kilometer short course provides a taste of the region’s beauty through Gums Loop, Tana Umaga Track, and Forest Loop. This route showcases the lush greenery and winding paths characteristic of Wellington's natural landscapes before crossing over the Wainuiomata River. Each course is designed to challenge runners with unique terrain features while offering breathtaking scenery at every turn. McKerrows Revenge invites trail enthusiasts to explore hidden tracks that lie just beyond the city’s edge, making this event a must for any adventure runner seeking an off-road escapade in Wellington's natural splendor.
