Watauga Running Scared

Get ready for an eerie and enchanting morning as Watauga hosts its annual Running Scared 5K & 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk, set to take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Capp Smith Park Amphitheater. Organized by the City of Watauga Parks & Community Services Department, this Halloween-themed event is a delightful way for runners and walkers of all ages to kick off their spooky season festivities.
Participants can choose between two events: the professionally timed 5K Run or the family-friendly 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk. Both options promise an engaging morning filled with festive activities and community spirit. Costumes are highly encouraged, so don your spookiest getup and join fellow participants for a thrilling start to October.
Registration fees vary based on age group and timing of enrollment:
- Early registration (through October 5) offers discounts: $20 for ages 17 and younger and $25 for adults in the 5K Run; $10 for children and $15 for adults in the Fun Run/Walk.
- Late registrations from October 6 onwards will cost slightly more, at $25 for youth and $30 for adults in the 5K, while the Fun Run/Walk increases to $15 for kids and $20 for adults.
For City of Watauga employees, a special rate applies: only $15 for early registration in the 5K event. Verification may be required at time of sign-up or packet pickup.
The race day schedule is as follows:
- Packet pick up and late registrations start at 7:00 AM.
- The 5K Run kicks off promptly at 8:00 AM, followed by the 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk a few minutes later at 8:10 AM.
- Awards for the 5K event will be presented to overall and age-group winners shortly after 9:00 AM.
Registration includes access to Halloween-themed family activities, professionally timed races (for the 5K only), refreshments post-race, and an opportunity to support local initiatives such as Shoes for Kids. Shirts are provided with early registration but may not be guaranteed past October 5th.
Participants in both events will enjoy a scenic route through Capp Smith Park, complete with festive decorations and spirited volunteers along the way. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome at the Fun Run/Walk event, ensuring that everyone can participate safely and comfortably.
