The TARC Wapack and Back is a technical trail running event scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026. Organized by the Trail Animals Running Club, the race takes place on the Wapack Trail, stretching from Ashburnham, Massachusetts, to Greenfield, New Hampshire. The course is known for its rugged terrain, featuring boulder fields, granite slabs, and significant vertical gain, offering expansive views of the New England landscape.
Race Categories and SpecificationsThe event offers three primary distances, each catering to different levels of endurance. The 43-mile and 50-mile ultramarathons are out-and-back courses, while the 21.5-mile race is a point-to-point "end-to-end" run.
| Distance | Elevation Gain | Start Time | Course Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|
| 21.5 Miles | ~4,600 ft | 9:00 AM | Technical single-track, rocky ledges |
| 43 Miles | ~9,200 ft | 5:00 AM | Double traverse of the Wapack Trail |
| 50 Miles | ~10,800 ft | 5:00 AM | Extended technical ultramarathon |
The geography of the Wapack Trail is notoriously challenging, defined by exposed rocky ledges and thick forests. In early May, New England weather can vary significantly, with temperatures typically ranging between 8°C (46°F) and 18°C (64°F), though humidity and insects such as black flies are common. The trail is marked primarily with yellow triangles; however, participants are encouraged to use GPS navigation due to the minimal race-specific markings. Aid stations are spaced up to 7.5 miles apart, providing water and basic snacks, but runners are required to carry at least two water bottles and their own specific nutritional needs.
Logistically, the start/finish for the 43 and 50-mile participants is located at the DCR Mount Watatic Reservation in Massachusetts. The 21.5-mile participants check in at the Fitchburg Sportsmen's Club and are bused to their northern start point. Strict cutoffs are enforced for safety and park staffing: 3:30 PM at Windblown and a final 7:30 PM course closure. The event is a nonprofit endeavor, with profits donated to land conservation trusts. It is also a Trail Sisters Approved and Pride on Foot partner event, emphasizing inclusive practices for women and non-binary participants.
