Utö Backyard

Utö Backyard is a trail-based backyard running event held on one of Stockholm’s most historic and scenic islands, Utö. Scheduled for Saturday, April 25, 2026, the race celebrates the island’s rich heritage—ranging from its 12th-century iron mines to its status as the birthplace of Swimrun. The event is designed as a full-day challenge focused on community and the archipelago lifestyle, hosted in collaboration with the renowned Utö Wärdshus. Participants can choose between two distinct formats that test endurance and speed on the island's natural forest trails.

Utö is located in the southern part of the Stockholm Archipelago and has a year-round population of approximately 200 residents, which swells significantly during the summer months. The demographic of the island consists primarily of hospitality workers, local artisans, and commuters to the mainland. The median annual household income in the Haninge Municipality, which oversees Utö, is approximately 340,000 SEK. Geographically, the island is characterized by its rugged coastline, ancient mine pits (now filled with water), and dense pine and spruce forests. In late April, the Stockholm Archipelago typically experiences crisp spring weather; average temperatures range from 3°C (37°F) to 10°C (50°F). Runners should expect technical trail conditions with roots and rocks, often damp from the spring thaw and sea mist.

The competition follows a "winner takes it all" rule, where the fastest runner to complete the final lap is crowned the champion. Organized by Dennis and Nicholas, the event encourages a "mini-weekend" atmosphere, prompting runners to book overnight stays at the island's inn to explore the deeper history and nature beyond the lap circuit. Access to Utö is provided via regular ferry services from Gruvbryggan. Beyond the running, the event emphasizes social interaction with food and drinks provided by local partners.
