Tough Topanga

A grueling trail run in the Santa Monica Mountains. What started as a no‑holds‑barred mountain run in the 1970s has become one of Los Angeles' favorite trail races. Tough Topanga returns to Topanga State Park on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Choose the classic 10k (1,117 ft vert) or the new 15k (1,713 ft vert) — a gnarly course dating back to the former Topanga Turkey Trot. $2,500 prize purse: $2,000 for 10k (1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200), $500 winner‑takes‑all for 15k, and $500 Downhill Mile bonus ($250 each to fastest male/female on the final timed mile). Race #1 of the Bulldog Challenge Series. Cupless event.

Prize Purse & Bonuses:

• 10k — $2,000 total: 1st $500, 2nd $300, 3rd $200 (male/female)
• 15k — $500 winner‑takes‑all (male/female)
• Downhill Mile — $500 total: fastest male and female on the final timed mile each win $250
• Local Legend — fastest female and male Topangans (Topanga residents) receive awards
• Overall 10k and 15k winners also earn comp entries to SoCalTrail's season finale at Crystal Cove (December 12, $2,000 15k prize purse)

Bulldog Challenge Series (3 races):

• Race #1 — Tough Topanga (June 20): 10k or 15k
• Race #2 — Tough Mugu 25k (July 18)
• Race #3 — Bulldog Ultra 50k (August 15)
• Series finishers earn limited edition Bulldog Challenge jacket
• Age group winners entered into raffle for 2027 season pass
• Overall champions (highest points) receive custom plaque and invited back to defend title in 2027
• Points based on finish time as percentage of winner's time (max 100 points)

Course Highlights:

• Start at Trippet Ranch, Topanga State Park
• Oak forests, chaparral wildflowers, sandstone cliffs, valley vistas, views of San Gabriel mountains and Pacific Ocean
• 15k includes Garapito singletrack — switchbacks into the canyon, follows historic Turkey Trot route
• 10k follows groomed fire road to Eagle Rock, cruises red dirt mesa to Hub Junction
• Final mile is the Downhill Mile challenge — send it hard for the cash bonus
• Footpath is the official mapping and navigation tool (routes available on event website)

Aid Stations & Cutoffs (course closes at 11:00 AM):

• 15k: Eagle Junction (1.5 mi, 8:40 AM), Garapito (5.0 mi, 9:45 AM), Hub Junction (6.5 mi, 10:10 AM), Eagle Junction (7.1 mi, 10:35 AM)
• 10k: Eagle Junction (1.5 mi, 8:40 AM), Hub Junction (2.9 & 3.4 mi, 10:10 AM), Eagle Junction (4.8 mi, 10:35 AM)
• Fully stocked with water, electrolyte, snacks; staffed by local run clubs

Parking & Shuttles:

• FREE off‑site parking and shuttles on Topanga Canyon Blvd
• No race site parking at Trippet Ranch on race day
• Street parking available on Entrada Road (first come, first serve — keep all tires inside white line)
• Trippet Ranch parking lot opens at 8:00 AM (credit card or phone app only) — limited capacity, not for race participants
• Limited cell phone service in Topanga Canyon — plan accordingly

Cupless Event:

• All SoCalTrail events are cupless
• Bring your own bottle, hydration pack, or reusable cup
• Aid stations will not have disposable cups

Volunteers & Discounts:

• Volunteers earn race credits ($15/hour) toward future SoCalTrail races (transferable to friends/family)
• Active firefighters, race directors, running group organizers, and Topanga locals — email for discount code

The Cause:

• A portion of proceeds donated to LA Fire Station 69 in Topanga Canyon to keep the Santa Monica Mountains safe during fire season
