THE CHALLENGE RACE SUB3.5 2 is a full marathon built around breaking 3 hours 30 minutes, run as a JAAF-certified race on the Arakawa riverbank in Tokyo. The 10 km loop course starting and finishing at the Toda Bridge athletics stadium has an elevation difference of no more than 1.5 to 2 m, and the organizers bill it as Japan's fastest. The field is limited to 200 runners, with 30 places in each pacing group, and runners may switch groups after entering. Pacers run front-loaded, even and back-loaded strategies: front-loaded groups at 3:20:00 and 3:25:00, an even group at 3:28:00 and a back-loaded group at 3:30:00. Each lap has three aid stations stocked with Amino Vital GOLD drink and Amino Shot Perfect Energy gel, and runners line up only five minutes before the start so they can warm up on the riverbank or at the stadium until then. The entry fee is 13,200 yen and the time limit is 4 hours 30 minutes. Registration runs 8:00 to 9:00, the opening ceremony follows at 9:10, and the start is at 9:30. The race is part of the R.LEAGUE ranking series, whose registered runners get 10 percent off repeat entries, and the race is a partner event of TEAM ONE TOKYO, a program that offers a chance at a Tokyo Marathon entry. Results are issued online about two hours after the race. The venue is a 12-minute walk from Nishidai Station on the Toei Mita Line.
