The Southern Divide 2026 is a 670 km mixed-terrain cycling odyssey starting on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Celebrating its fifth year, this self-sufficient adventure traverses the diverse landscapes of Southern England, beginning at the iconic Land’s End in Cornwall and concluding at Rochester Castle in Kent. The route is a demanding "tapestry" of ancient byways, gravel tracks, Dartmoor national park trails, and coastal downlands. Led by a female organizer, the event places a strong emphasis on welcoming women and newer bikepackers into the ultra-riding community, fostering a supportive environment through a shared WhatsApp group and live "dotwatcher" tracking for friends and family.
| Adventure Type | Time Limit | Start Time | End Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPIC Adventure | 88 Hours | 6:30 AM, May 7 | 10:30 PM, May 10 |
| CHALLENGE Adventure | 134 Hours | 6:00 AM, May 7 | 8:00 PM, May 13 |
Cornwall, the starting point of the journey, has a population of approximately 570,000 residents. The county is characterized by a distinct cultural identity and a history rooted in maritime trade and tin mining, with the "Cornish" recognized as a national minority. Demographically, Cornwall is approximately 98.2% White, with small but growing communities of Asian (0.7%) and Mixed (0.8%) residents. The region faces unique economic challenges, with a median household income of roughly £27,000, which is lower than the UK national average. However, its economy is bolstered by a robust tourism sector, drawing millions annually to its 400 miles of coastline and landmarks like Land's End.
Participants are required to be entirely self-sufficient, meaning they must manage their own navigation, mechanical repairs, and sleeping arrangements. While the EPIC pace is designed for experienced ultra-riders who may bivvy in fields with minimal sleep, the CHALLENGE pace allows more time to enjoy the scenery and utilize local accommodations. Both options start with a communal camping night at Land’s End on Wednesday, May 6, featuring a pizza van to fuel riders for the climb through the moors. The entry fee of £175.00 covers the GPS tracker, a rider cap, and the initial camping. For the best experience, a hardtail mountain bike or a gravel bike with wide tires and low gearing is recommended to handle the "hike-a-bike" sections and rocky terrain of the South and North Downs Ways.
