The 7th annual More Miles Last One Standing Challenge awaits runners on Saturday, 30 May 2026, kicking off at 7:00 AM sharp from 1600 Harpers Ferry Rd. in Knoxville, MD. This backyard ultra offers two distinct formats: a 4.167-mile qualifier for the Backyard Ultra World Championship and a 1-mile "Backyard for Mortals" event. Registration closes on Thursday, 28 May 2026 at 11:59 PM ET, so secure your spot before the cutoff.
| Event | Distance per Yard | Start Time | Format / Duration | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Last One Standing Challenge | 4.167 miles | 7:00 AM | Backyard ultra – one yard per hour until one remains | Qualifier for Backyard Ultra World Championship |
| 1-Mile "Backyard for Mortals" | 1 mile | 7:00 AM | 24 hours, then tie-breaker (+1 mile per hour) | Open to kids, teens, walkers, and ultra-curious |
How does a backyard ultra work? Every hour, on the hour, runners set out to complete one full yard. Finish before the hour ends, and you earn the right to start the next hour. Miss the cutoff, and your race is over. The last person still completing yards within the time limit is crowned the champion.
Cash prizes return for 2026. Both the Last One Standing Champion and The Assist (the second-place finisher) will earn their total official race miles in real cash. No limits, no caps—just pure incentive to keep showing up hour after hour. (Jogging between yards doesn't count, so save your energy for the course.)
Mandatory rules keep the competition fair and safe. Runners must carry no external aid beyond designated areas. The 4.167-mile course is fully marked, and trail shoes are recommended for the mixed terrain around Knoxville. Random gear checks may be conducted, and all decisions by race officials are final.
What makes the 1-mile "Backyard for Mortals" special? It runs for 24 hours under the same last-one-standing format, then shifts into a tie-breaker protocol where each additional hour adds one extra mile until only one person remains. Perfect for kids, teens, walkers, or anyone ultra-curious who wants to experience the backyard magic without the full 4.167-mile commitment. Complete one hour and stop, or keep going—the choice is yours.
Register by 20 April 2026 to guarantee your preferred shirt size. All participants receive a finisher shirt, but those who sign up after that date will receive remaining sizes on a first-come, first-served basis. Refunds are not available for this event, so commit with confidence.
Past performances speak for themselves. In 2025, Harol Samir Baca Ponce pushed to 108.3 miles, while Philip Perkins crossed the century mark at 100 miles. The Knoxville course has witnessed grit, glory, and hours of determination. Full results from 2020 through 2025 are available for review.
Beyond the race itself, the atmosphere at More Miles is famously welcoming. The 1-mile event is described as "where the party happens"—extra time between laps, music, families cheering, and a vibe that keeps runners smiling even as the hours add up. The 4.167-mile event serves as an official qualifier for the Backyard Ultra World Championship, attracting serious contenders from across the country.
Course maps, elevation profiles, and GPX files are available at www.moremilestogo.com/los-course-maps-and-profile.html. Race headquarters operates from the start line at 1600 Harpers Ferry Rd., with parking and amenities clearly marked. Volunteers and spectators are welcome to cheer, track live updates, and witness history as the field narrows to one.
The More Miles Last One Standing Challenge asks a simple question: how many yards can you stand? Whether you chase the world championship qualifying standard, the cash prize for total miles, or simply the joy of lasting longer than you ever thought possible, this 7th edition promises an unforgettable backyard ultra experience in Knoxville, MD.
