How does a backyard ultra work? Every hour, on the hour, runners set out to complete one full yard. Finish before the hour ends, and you earn the right to start the next hour. Miss the cutoff, and your race is over. The last person still completing yards within the time limit is crowned the champion.

Cash prizes return for 2026. Both the Last One Standing Champion and The Assist (the second-place finisher) will earn their total official race miles in real cash.
