About the Event

The Montane Summer Spine races take place from June 13th to June 20th, 2026, along the iconic Pennine Way from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders, UK. This expedition-style non-stop racing series includes six events ranging from 43 miles to 268 miles, widely regarded as "Britain's Most Brutal" endurance challenge.

Sprint South (46 miles)
Start: June 13, 12:00 Edale • Finish: June 14, 06:00 Hebden Bridge • 18h limit • 2,017m ascent

Event Logistics & Participant Information:

Age Requirement: Must be aged 21 or over at race time for all events.
Spine Qualifying (268 miles): Ultra over 80 miles, or previous Challenger North/South completion. Mountain marathons, adventure races, orienteering, fell races, Bob Graham Round, long-distance walking, Mountain Leader/Mountain Rescue/Armed Forces experience considered.
Challenger Qualifying (108/160 miles): Ultra over 60 miles, or previous Spine race completion. Similar experience categories accepted.
Sprint Qualifying (43/46 miles): Marathon or ultra marathon completion. Adventure races, orienteering, fell races also considered.
Race Format: Non-stop, unsupported. Self-sufficiency and navigation skill required.
Checkpoints: Staffed with volunteer support. Described by participants as exceptional care ("looked after like kings").
Temperature Range: Daytime 5°C to 25°C. Nighttime 0°C to 10°C. June daylight: 19 hours.
Payment Schedule: Deposits secure places. Full payments due 100 days before race start (Spine/Challenger) or on entry (Sprint). Non-refundable deposits.

Route, Atmosphere & Community:

The Pennine Way: Britain's most iconic national trail crossing Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall, Cheviots, and the Scottish Borders.
Spirit: Described by participants as "The Spine family" — volunteers are central to the race experience.
Testimonials: Winners and finishers emphasize mental toughness, respect for the course, and the extraordinary support at checkpoints.
Challenger South difficulty: Notoriously difficult in its own right, similar degree of difficulty as the full Spine.
Sprint challenge: 18 hours sounds ample, but technical terrain demands concentration, fitness, resolve, and respect.
