The Isle of Wight Marathon

The Isle of Wight Marathon, set for October 3rd, 2027, offers runners an unparalleled journey through the quieter western parts of this picturesque island. Starting at Cowes and weaving through charming towns like Gurnard, Porchfield, Shalfleet, Yarmouth, Thorley, Chessell, Ningwood, Northwood, and back to Cowes, the course presents a mix of undulating terrain that challenges even seasoned marathoners.
This historic event celebrates its 71st edition for men and 52nd for women. Known as the longest continuously run marathon in the UK since 1957, it holds significant historical importance, notably being where Dale Greig became the first woman to complete a marathon under three-and-a-half hours in 1964.
The scenic route offers runners stunning views of rural landscapes and quiet country lanes. Despite its beauty, the course is anything but flat; many participants find the second half particularly challenging due to rolling hills. Yet, every step taken rewards with breathtaking scenery that makes this marathon a memorable experience for all who participate.
Registration takes place at Isle of Wight Community Club in Cowes from 09:00 on race day, where runners can collect their numbers and timing chips. The event is strictly timed, with a finish time limit set at six hours and thirty minutes to ensure safety.
Runners are encouraged to arrive early as the entry deadline is September 30th, though limited entries may be available on-site if not sold out beforehand. Travel options include ferry services from Southampton via Red Funnel Ferries or Wightlink ferries with discounted rates for race participants.
Upon crossing the finish line, top male and female runners will receive cash prizes ranging from £20 to £60 for positions 1st through 5th. Additionally, there are awards for age groups and teams of three.
