The Isle of Wight Marathon

About the Event

The Isle of Wight Marathon, set to take place on October 4th, 2026, marks the historic milestone of its 70th running for men and the 51st for women. This renowned race has been a continuous fixture since 1957, establishing itself as one of the longest-running marathons in both the United Kingdom and globally.
The event is celebrated not only for its longevity but also for groundbreaking moments such as being the first marathon to feature an officially timed female runner under racing conditions back in 1964. Since then, it has been a trailblazer for women's participation, hosting the inaugural UK National Women’s Marathon Championship in 1978.
Registration opens on February 1st with early bird discounts available until January 31st at £23 for affiliated runners and £26 for unaffiliated participants. Standard entry fees are set at £25 for affiliated runners and £28 for those who aren't members of a running club, while day-of entries cost slightly more.
The race boasts an intimate atmosphere with a cap of 400 competitors, ensuring that every runner receives personalized attention throughout the event. Participants will enjoy changing facilities and bag storage at Race HQ located in Isle of Wight Community Club on Park Road Cowes.
Travel to the island is straightforward via ferry services from Southampton provided by Red Funnel Ferries, with schedules available online for easy planning. On race day, participants can expect a challenging yet scenic course that winds through picturesque towns like Cowes and Gurnard before heading into more rural areas such as Shalfleet and Yarmouth.
Water stations are strategically placed every 3 to 4 miles along the route, providing essential hydration throughout your run. The undulating terrain will test both endurance and resilience, with no public or race-provided toilet facilities available on course—though runners have access to private businesses for rest stops if needed.
Upon crossing the finish line at approximately six hours thirty minutes (15-minute mile pace), all participants are guaranteed a medal in recognition of their achievement. Awards ceremonies will follow promptly around 3:30 PM, where top male and female finishers as well as age group winners receive monetary prizes ranging from £20 to £60.
For those interested in the rich history behind this iconic marathon, detailed records dating back to its inception are available online for exploration. The Isle of Wight Marathon continues to honor its legacy while embracing new generations of runners eager to experience one of Britain's most cherished sporting traditions.
The race is operated under UKA Rules and participants must adhere strictly to these regulations or risk disqualification without the inclusion in official results. Additionally, refunds are subject to a policy that offers 90% refund up to three months before the event date, decreasing to 50% within two weeks of the start time.
To ensure safety on course, runners should refrain from using headphones and must not run with dogs. Detailed race day instructions will be provided upon entry registration.
