The Enchanted Ultra invites runners who dare to explore one of England's most remote and rugged terrains. From ancient forests shrouded in mist to mystical bogs and enchanted valleys, every step unveils a new chapter of the Cheviots' storied landscape.
Navigate using your GPS device as you follow our meticulously crafted digital route through this vast wilderness. With 11 hours on the clock, you’ll traverse some of the most iconic landmarks of these hills, including the enigmatic Hen Hole – an eerie chasm said to be haunted by mischievous fairies luring unsuspecting travelers into its depths.
Prepare for a race that tests your resilience against extreme weather conditions. From fierce winds and sub-zero temperatures to varied terrain ranging from rolling grassy trails to steep ascents and rocky paths, the Cheviot Hills offer an ever-changing landscape of challenges. Dense woodlands give way to open moorland as you push forward.
Safety is paramount throughout this challenging course. Medical support will be available along with marshals stationed strategically around the route to ensure your well-being.
Upon crossing the finish line at Wooler, enjoy a hearty meal of soup and sandwiches while reflecting on an unforgettable journey that showcases the beauty and history of these ancient lands. You’ll receive a commemorative medal and certificate celebrating your achievement in this elite adventure.
The race begins near The Mart in Wooler before heading towards Humbleton Hill and continuing along St Cuthbert’s Way past Yeavering Bell, an ancient hillfort steeped in historical significance. Checkpoint 1 awaits at Hethpool after the first ten miles of rugged terrain. From there, you’ll traverse College Valley to Mounthooley, passing near Hen Hole before ascending Cheviot and then descending via Harthope Burn towards Langleeford for checkpoint 2.
The route continues back through Coldlaw, Snear Hill, and Earl to return to Wooler, where the race concludes. Keep an eye out for local folklore along your path – tales of witches at Switchback Cottage might give you a thrill!
Entry fees cover all necessary equipment including digital maps, GPS trackers, two fully stocked aid stations (featuring real Coke), medical support throughout the course, and post-race refreshments.
