The Drop - Skipton

The Drop invites you into an immersive navigation challenge where uncertainty reigns supreme. Unlike traditional races, this event strips away all familiar markers and directions to plunge participants into a world of self-reliance.
Upon registration, runners hand over their electronic devices, watches, and any navigational aids they might have. In exchange, they receive a race number and an emergency bag that must be carried throughout the challenge. The journey begins when you board a bus with blackout blindfolds on — no clue as to your destination or direction.
Once dropped off at an undisclosed location 10 or 15 miles from the event center (as measured in a straight line), participants are tasked with finding their way back without any maps, GPS devices, or guidance. The terrain and route chosen by each runner is entirely up to them, making every decision critical as they navigate through unfamiliar territory.
The core Drop challenge comes in two distances: 10 miles and the more demanding 15-mile version. Both options offer a stripped-down experience where only your wits and endurance guide you back to safety. The shorter distance maintains the same level of pressure but offers a quicker turnaround, while the longer route extends decision-making over an extended period.
For those traveling from outside the area or unfamiliar with local geography, there's also The Drop 6 — a non-local-only challenge located just six miles away from the finish line. This variant aims to ensure that all participants face equal levels of uncertainty and require no prior knowledge of the surroundings.
Throughout the event, strict rules govern participant behavior:
- No GPS devices can be used outside of sealed emergency bags.
- Maps must only come from official sources if provided at all.
- Transport shortcuts are strictly prohibited; you're on foot throughout.
- Emergency bag integrity is crucial — breaking its seal means disqualification.
Live GPS tracking offers an optional feature for added safety and to share progress with supporters. This technology, accurate within five meters but subject to occasional delays or signal issues, allows participants' journeys to be monitored in real-time from anywhere around the world.
