The Cake Race is a traditional "BM" (Category B, Medium distance) fell race organized by Saddleworth Runners, taking place on Saturday, May 2, 2026. True to its name, the event combines a rigorous 10-mile mountain run with a community-wide cake competition. Based in Diggle, Greater Manchester, the race is designed for experienced fell runners and is specifically not recommended for "fun runners" due to the technical nature of the Pennine moorland terrain.

The geography of the course offers a diverse tour of the South Pennines. The route begins with a steep climb up "Boat Lane," a historic path used by horses to pull canal barges over the hills. Runners cross the open moorland on flagged paths toward Brun Clough Reservoir, passing through Marsden and the Wessenden Valley. A technical highlight of the course is a long flight of stone steps descending the side of Butterley Reservoir dam, immediately followed by an equivalent climb on the opposite side. In early May, the Pennine weather can be severe; average temperatures are approximately 12°C (54°F), but exposed sections of the moor are frequently subject to strong prevailing winds and low visibility.
Logistically, the race enforces strict safety protocols. A mandatory kit list includes a waterproof top (with taped seams and hood), waterproof bottoms, hat, gloves, compass, map, and whistle. Kit checks are carried out, and a safety cut-off is enforced at Butterley Reservoir: runners must pass this point within 1.5 hours of starting or face retirement. Registration opens at 9:00 AM at the Diggle Band Club. Beyond the physical challenge, the "Cake Competition" features prizes for the best tasting and best decorated cakes brought by participants, which are then shared among runners at the finish line.
