About the Event

The Blue 2 Blue Challenge is widely regarded as the most difficult 50K in Connecticut, scheduled for Sunday, May 3, 2026. This "graduate level" trail race covers roughly 33 miles of exceptionally technical terrain, connecting two of the state's famous Blue-Blazed Hiking Trails: the Regicides and the Quinnipiac. Because of the extreme difficulty and rocky nature of the course, it traditionally functions with a finisher rate of just over 80%, which is notably low for a 50K distance with a 10-hour cutoff.
Event Detail Information
Start Time 7:00 AM ET
Distance / Elevation ~33 miles / 6,350 ft gain
Location 495 Blake St (West Rock), New Haven, CT
Strict Cutoff 10 Hours (Final finish by 5:00 PM)
The geography of the course is a grueling out-and-back route starting at West Rock Playground. Runners face an immediate climb via the Westville Feeder Trail to reach the Regicides Trail, known for six miles of jagged, rock-strewn paths. The route continues over High Rock, Mad Mare Ridge, and Mt. Sanford, eventually reaching the turnaround point in Prospect at mile 16.4. In early May, New Haven typically experiences cool spring mornings with average highs of 19°C (66°F). However, the technicality of the "Blue blazes" means that even in ideal weather, the pace is significantly slower than a standard road or rail-trail marathon. Logistically, this race has strict entry requirements; runners must have completed a trail 50K (excluding timed or looped events) within the previous 12 months to move off the waitlist. The event director, Steven Lutjens of Live Loud Running, enforces a "no crews and no pacers" policy to maintain the purity of the challenge. Aid stations are strategically placed at approximately miles 4, 8, 11, 16, 21, 24, and 28. Mandatory time cutoffs are enforced at the turnaround (4.5 hours) and mile 24 (7 hours). Finisher swag is highly regarded within the local community, featuring custom hoodies and trucker hats. Participation in technical ultramarathons like the Blue 2 Blue Challenge typically reflects a specific demographic within the broader running community. In the United States, ultramarathon participation has grown exponentially over the last decade, yet it remains less diverse than shorter road races. According to industry surveys, approximately 88% of ultramarathon participants identify as White, with Hispanic participants making up roughly 6%, and Black participants accounting for less than 1% of the ultra-distance field. The high barrier to entry—including the requirement for specific technical experience and the financial cost of specialized gear—contributes to these consistent participation patterns across "gnarly" East Coast trail events.
