The Terra Australis Bike Epic 2026 is a 6,250-kilometre individual time trial (ITT) that traverses the entire eastern length of the Australian continent. Scheduled to begin on Friday, May 1, 2026, the "South to North" edition starts at Cape York Tip (Pajinka) in Queensland and concludes at Wilsons Promontory in Victoria. This event is not a sanctioned race but a self-supported bikepacking challenge for elite ultra-endurance riders, requiring them to manage their own navigation, resupply, and safety across some of the most remote terrain in Australia.

The route is a mix of approximately 40% paved surfaces and 60% unpaved roads, including rugged dirt tracks, stock routes, and fire trails. As a self-supported ITT, participants are strictly prohibited from receiving outside assistance or pre-arranged support. Riders must carry all necessary equipment for survival in varied climates—from the tropical humidity of Northern Queensland to the potentially freezing temperatures of the Victorian Alpine regions. GPS tracking via devices like SPOT or Garmin InReach is mandatory for safety and to verify that the established route is followed.

The race begins at the northernmost point of the Australian continent in the Shire of Cook and the Northern Peninsula Area. This region is sparsely populated and carries immense cultural significance. According to the 2021 Australian Census, the Cape York region has a population of approximately 7,800 residents. The demographic profile is notably distinct from the rest of Australia, with 47.1% of the population identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, compared to the national average of 3.2%. In specific northern communities like Pajinka and Somerset, this percentage is often significantly higher.

The local culture is deeply connected to the land, with many areas governed by Native Title and Managed by Traditional Owners. The Adnyamathanha and various Cape York groups maintain strong spiritual and ancestral links to the "Top End." For cyclists, this means traversing regions where respect for local customs and land permits is paramount. The economy in the far north is driven by tourism, cattle station work, and Indigenous-led land management. Participants will pass through diverse landscapes, including the Daintree Rainforest and the vast savannas of central Queensland, where the median age of 35 reflects a relatively young and resilient workforce adapted to the challenges of the Australian outback.

The 6,250 km journey is a psychological "marathon of marathons." Riders must strategically plan resupply points, which can be hundreds of kilometres apart in the northern sections. While the route passes through towns and commercial hubs where riders can rent rooms or buy food, the "Trail Angel" rule prohibits accepting help from the general public or family. The goal is to move as a self-contained unit across the "eastern seaboard" and the "Great Dividing Range."

With zero current participants registered for the 2026 edition (as of early tracking), the event remains one of the most exclusive and difficult cycling challenges in the world. The clock runs non-stop from the moment the rider departs Pajinka, and there is no finish time cut-off.
