Tayside Orienteering Club presents an exciting opportunity to explore the serene Backmuir Woods on August 24, 2026. Located west of Dundee and easily accessible via the nearby dual carriageway, this woodland setting offers a perfect blend of nature and adventure for orienteers of all skill levels. Registration opens at 11:45 AM, allowing participants to sign in ahead of their chosen start time between noon and 1 PM. The event concludes with course closures at 2:30 PM, providing ample opportunity for participants to enjoy the scenic trails and challenging terrain throughout the afternoon. Backmuir Woods boasts a flat landscape dotted with well-marked paths, making it an ideal location for both newcomers and seasoned orienteers alike. Participants can choose from several courses tailored to different experience levels: - White Course: A gentle introduction at just 1 km in length, suitable for beginners who will navigate entirely along marked paths.
- Yellow Course: Slightly more challenging than the White but still on paths, this course covers approximately 2.5 kilometers. - Orange Course: Ideal for those with some orienteering experience or young enthusiasts looking to step up their skills; it spans around 3.5 km and includes controls a bit off the beaten path.
- Light Green Course: For adult and experienced junior orienteers, this course offers navigation through more varied terrain over about 4 kilometers. - Green Course: The most advanced option at roughly 4.5 kilometers in length, designed for those with extensive experience who enjoy tackling tougher navigational challenges. About Dundee
Learn more about the host city, Dundee.
Dundee is an industrial city and port, historically part of Angus county in northeast Scotland. It stands on the north bank of the River Tay, which here broadens out into the North Sea, and in 2022 had a population of 148,000. Dundee's prime visitor attractions are the polar sailing ship RRS Discovery, the Verdant Works jute mill, and the V&A design museum. It's also a good base for nearby major golf tournaments, and for exploring Deeside and the eastern Highlands.
