The Tails in the Wind Mile is Calgary’s premier point-to-point dog mile, scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026. This unique event is designed for both competitive speed and community fun, offering a net-downhill course that promises to be the "fastest fun on four legs." Partnered with the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), the race serves as a fundraiser to support animals in need throughout the province.
| Division | Description | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Solo Sprint | Human Only - Competitive | Unobstructed PR attempt |
| Solo Jaunt | Human Only - Open | Casual furry-free mile |
| Dynamic Duo | Dog and Human Runners | Fast-paced pair running |
| Sniff and Stroll | Dog and Human Walkers | Relaxed pace with treats |
The geography of the event utilizes the scenic pedestrian paths of North Glenmore Park in Calgary. The accurately measured 1-mile route begins near the Snowy Owl Picnic Area and descends toward the Bluebird Picnic Area. This point-to-point configuration benefits from a net-downhill gradient and often a favorable tailwind coming off the Elbow River valley. In early May, Calgary typically sees crisp spring weather with average highs of 14°C (57°F). Participants should note that the path remains open to the public during the event, requiring careful adherence to course etiquette and right-side positioning on the trail.
Logistically, the event features staggered wave starts beginning at 9:30 AM to prevent congestion. All dogs must be on a standard maximum 6-foot leash (no retractable leashes allowed) and be comfortable in crowded settings. The "Post-Race Pawty" at the finish line includes a bubble machine, human refreshments, and a specialized "Doggy Buffet" featuring peanut butter and treats. Registration is managed through Race Roster, and participants are encouraged to reach the event goal of raising CA$1,000 for AARCS. Parking is available at North Glenmore Parking Lot P, conveniently located near the start/finish area.
