Strides in Solidarity at UW returns to Seattle on May 31st, marking the beginning of a meaningful journey across the University of Washington campus. This year’s event is set within the lush greenery and historic buildings that dot the university grounds, inviting participants from all walks of life to come together for a cause greater than themselves.
The race day atmosphere in Seattle during late spring brings with it a sense of renewal as cherry blossoms begin to fade and the air holds just enough moisture to keep things crisp. The sun rises early over Mount Rainier’s peak, casting long shadows across the UW campus pathways that wind through Quad Plaza and beyond. It is here where runners will find themselves among familiar sights like Suzzallo Library and Red Square, each step a testament to community solidarity.
Since its inception in 2018, Strides in Solidarity has become an integral part of Seattle’s spring running calendar, drawing hundreds of participants annually who walk or run the five-kilometer course. Each year, the event not only raises funds for PIH's fight against tuberculosis in Sierra Leone but also fosters a deeper connection among those involved with Public Health Interventions (PIH) chapters across Washington State and beyond.
The 5K fun-run/walk at UW weaves through well-trodden paths that are both scenic and familiar to the local community. Starting near Red Square, participants will navigate around Suzzallo Library before heading towards the lush greenery of the Quad Plaza area. The terrain is predominantly flat with soft yet firm trails underfoot, offering a pleasant challenge without being overly taxing for walkers or casual runners.
In terms of start/finish details, bib numbers are handed out at Red Square starting from 7:30 AM on race day, allowing participants ample time to warm up and familiarize themselves with the course. Aid stations will be strategically placed along the route every kilometer mark, providing water and snacks for those in need of a quick recharge. The race begins promptly at 9:00 AM sharp from Red Square.
Weather conditions during May are generally mild but can vary slightly. On average, temperatures hover around 13.8°C with occasional winds that feel like they’re pushing you forward rather than against you. Humidity levels typically sit at about 72%, making the air thick and noticeable as one breathes in deep lungfuls while running or walking through campus grounds.
