Spunch! is an innovative, family-friendly adventure that invites runners and walkers to explore the scenic landscapes around Hathersage through a unique treasure hunt experience. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or just looking for some fun outdoors, this event offers something special with its vibrant atmosphere and flexible options.
Participants can choose from three course durations—60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes—and distances ranging from 2 kilometers to 22 kilometers based on their preference. The adventure kicks off at the charming Scotsman's Tap in Hathersage, a welcoming venue with both indoor and outdoor seating along the River Derwent.
Registration opens promptly at 5:30 PM, allowing participants plenty of time to get settled before starting between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. The event is designed for solo adventurers or those who prefer teaming up in pairs or groups; organizers can help pair individuals if needed. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
The heart of the adventure lies in using the MapRun app to navigate through over 60 SpunchPoints scattered across Hathersage and its surrounding countryside, including some challenging terrain around Carhead Rocks and Sheepwash Bank. The event takes place during one of Hathersage's late summer evenings, offering runners a chance to enjoy both daylight and twilight conditions.
Participants will experience a mix of tarmac paths and rugged off-road trails as they explore the lush hills and valleys north of the village. With stunning views around every turn, this is an ideal opportunity for locals to rediscover their surroundings or newcomers to fall in love with Hathersage's natural beauty.
After completing your adventure, head back to the Scotsman's Tap where a warm welcome awaits alongside delicious food and drinks. The pub also hosts a regular Thursday night quiz at 9 PM if you're looking to extend your evening.
Traveling by train? No problem! Hathersage Train Station is just a short walk away from the event venue, making it easy for visitors coming from Sheffield or Manchester. For those driving in, ample parking is available within walking distance of the pub and the start line.
